Most people don’t connect their exhaustion to what they ate yesterday, but blood sugar instability can absolutely trash sleep quality. When blood sugar drops too low during the night (hypoglycemia), the body releases stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol to bring levels back up. People who eat high-carb dinners or snack on sugary foods before bed often experience this blood sugar rollercoaster. They fall asleep easily because the initial blood sugar spike makes them drowsy, but a few hours later when levels crash, their sleep becomes fragmented and restless. Chronic low-grade inflammation keeps the body in a state of mild alert, making truly deep, restorative sleep difficult to achieve. This inflammation can come from various sources: undiagnosed food sensitivities, gut problems, autoimmune conditions, or even dental issues like gum disease.

When the immune system is constantly activated at a low level, it affects sleep-regulating neurotransmitters and hormones. The body can’t fully relax and shift into recovery mode because it’s still trying to deal with whatever’s causing the inflammation. Stabilizing blood sugar through consistent meal timing and balanced macronutrients often helps more than people expect. Eating protein with every meal, avoiding large amounts of refined carbohydrates before bed, and not going more than 4-5 hours without eating during the day can smooth out those nighttime blood sugar crashes.

Addressing inflammation might mean working with a doctor to identify food sensitivities, healing gut issues, or treating underlying autoimmune conditions. It’s not a quick fix, but for people with chronic inflammation, it can be the difference between constantly dragging through the day and actually feeling rested.

Something’s preventing the body from getting quality rest, and that something is usually fixable once it’s identified.
